Pichwai Cow Painting: Cows, Calves, Lotus Ponds and Peacocks
15 designs Folk paintings Updated 9 Oct 2026
A pichwai cow painting is one of the most peaceful things you can hang at home: soft white cows, pink lotus, deep green water and a touch of gold. Pichwai are large cloth paintings from Nathdwara in Rajasthan, and the tradition is devotional. Our designs keep only the nature side of it.
These 15 pichwai cow painting images are all original. They are grouped into cows in a lotus pond, cow and calf, lotus pichwai, peacock and lotus, and cows under a tree. Each lists its medium, motifs, where it suits and a tip from our studio table.
For the wider tradition, read pichwai painting. If you like detailed borders and natural colours, also see pattachitra painting from Odisha.
Pichwai Cows in a Lotus Pond
The lotus pond, or kamal talai, is the classic pichwai scene. Cows stand at the water's edge while lotus leaves fill every bit of the pond.

Three cows walk along the edge of a lotus pond. The deep green water makes the white cows and pink flowers glow.
Artist tip Paint the pond in two greens, dark at the bottom and lighter near the cows, for depth.

A single cow in a kamal talai with gold leaf on the jewellery. Small enough for a study or a corner shelf.
Artist tip Apply gold leaf last, on a thin layer of size glue, and press with soft cotton.

Cows by the pond on a dark blue ground, like a night scene. White and gold stand out sharply on navy.
Artist tip On dark grounds, paint cows in white twice before adding any shading.
Pichwai Cow and Calf Painting
A cow with her calf is a gentle theme and a common gift for a new home. These show three ways to paint the pair.

The cow bends her head toward the calf. A border of pink lotus closes the scene and makes it feel complete.
Artist tip Make the calf's legs slightly shorter and thicker so it reads as young.

A clean pencil outline to trace or copy. Use it as a starting point for your own colours.
Artist tip Draw the cow's body as an oval first, then add the neck, head and legs.

Red ground, white cattle, green and gold details. This is close to the traditional palette and works on a warm wall.
Artist tip Natural colours fade in sun. Hang the piece on a wall that gets no direct light.
How to Make a Pichwai Cow Painting
- Choose the base. Cotton cloth stretched on a frame is traditional. Canvas or 300 gsm paper is easier for practice.
- Paint the ground. Deep green, navy, red or teal. Give it two coats and let it dry an hour.
- Draw the outline. Cows are ovals with a long neck and small head. Add lotus leaves as circles and flowers as layered petals.
- Block in colour. Cows in white, lotus in pink, leaves in two greens.
- Add details. Ornaments, eyes, petal lines, leaf veins. A size 0 or 00 brush helps.
- Finish with gold. Gold acrylic or gold leaf on borders and jewellery. Seal with clear matt varnish.

Lotus Pichwai Painting
A pichwai painting lotus panel needs no cows at all. Rows of flowers and leaves make calm, modern panels.

A neat grid of lotus flowers and leaves. Repeating one motif makes it modern while keeping the pichwai look.
Artist tip Draw a light pencil grid first so every flower sits in the same place.

Gold lotus and buds on black. Rich and striking, it looks good in a dining area with warm lights.
Artist tip Use metallic gold acrylic over a yellow ochre base. It looks brighter and covers in one coat.

A lotus pichwai painting outline for practice. Trace it onto canvas or fill with your own colours.
Artist tip Use a 0.5 mm pen for petals and 0.1 mm for leaf veins.
Peacock and Lotus Pichwai Painting
A peacock lotus pichwai painting adds blue and turquoise to the usual greens. The birds bring movement to a still pond.

Two peacocks stand on either side of a lotus pond. The mirror layout feels balanced above a bed or console.
Artist tip Paint tail eyes in three layers: dark blue, then teal, then a small gold dot.

A peacock on a low branch with lotus flowers below. Tall and narrow, it fits a pillar or the side of a door.
Artist tip On tall panels, keep the heaviest colour at the bottom so the piece looks grounded.

Painted on silk with a wooden rod at the top. The cloth moves a little in a breeze, close to how pichwai were hung.
Artist tip Silk is slippery. Pin it tight on a frame before painting.
Pichwai Cows Under a Tree
Here the pond gives way to a shady tree. These suit people who want a pichwai painting cow scene with more open space.

Cows rest under a wide tree full of small flowers. The tree fills the top and the cows sit along the bottom.
Artist tip Paint the tree canopy as many small leaf clusters, not one green blob.

A tree of life with gold leaves and a cow and calf at its base. Rich and festive, with lots of fine work.
Artist tip Gold leaf on many small leaves takes hours. Plan two sittings and seal it after.

One cow, one tree, flat colours. An easy start for beginners who want to try the pichwai style.
Artist tip Leave white paper for the cow and paint around it. It keeps the edges clean.
Choosing a Pichwai Cow Painting
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Hand-painted or printed | Hand work has tiny brush marks and small changes between cows. Prints look flat and even. |
| Base cloth | Cotton and silk last longer than paper and can be rolled. |
| Gold | Real gold leaf shines softly. Gold paint is brighter but flatter. |
| Size and detail | Bigger pieces with fine borders take many more hours and cost more. |
Many families place a cow and calf piece in the living room or at the entrance. Some follow vastu advice on direction. Hang it where it gets good light but no direct sun.
Care
Dust with a soft dry brush. Keep cloth pichwai away from damp walls and bathrooms. Roll unframed cloth around a tube, painted side out, for storage. Never fold it, as creases crack the paint.
