Mandala Wall Art: Painted Walls, Canvas, Mirror Work and Rangoli
15 designs Mandala art Updated 9 Oct 2026
Mandala wall art turns a plain wall or a small corner into something you want to look at every day. Because a mandala grows in rings around one middle point, it sits beautifully on a wall, a canvas, a mirror board or even a rangoli on the floor.
This gallery groups 15 original pieces by surface. You will find designs painted straight on walls, canvases to hang, mirror and lippan style boards, bottles and plates for shelves, and festive rangoli. Each comes with the medium, who it suits and one tip.

Mandala Art on Wall: Painted Murals
Painting mandala art on wall surfaces needs a large compass, patience and good wall paint. These three show a full mural, a corner piece and a half mandala.

A 4 foot mandala in white on a warm terracotta wall. One colour keeps it calm, so the sofa and cushions can stay bright.
Artist tip Use a string tied to a nail at the centre as a compass for big circles.

A half mandala rising from behind the bed acts like a painted headboard. Navy and gold feel restful at night.
Artist tip Mask the straight base line with painter's tape so the half circle sits crisp on the bed line.

A quarter mandala tucked into a hallway corner. It is quick to paint and brightens a dull passage without much effort.
Artist tip Start from the corner point and measure every ring with the same string length.
Mandala Art on Canvas and Wall Hangings
For wall mandala art that can move with you, canvas is the safest choice if you rent your home or like to move things around. A mandala art wall hanging can go up with one nail.

Gold and white dots on black canvas. Simple to make, and it catches light from a lamp in the evening.
Artist tip Thin acrylic with a few drops of water so dots sit round and do not form peaks.

A round board painted with a mustard and maroon mandala, finished with cotton tassels. Light enough for a door or window side.
Artist tip Drill the hanging hole before you paint so the wood does not chip your design.

Three small canvases with one mandala split between them. A simple mandala wall art idea that fills a long wall neatly.
Artist tip Paint all three canvases side by side on the floor so lines meet at the joins.
How to Paint Mandala Wall Art Step by Step
- Plan the size. On a wall, a mandala should be about two thirds the width of the furniture below it.
- Mark the centre. Use a pencil dot. For big designs, tie a string to a pin at the centre and a pencil at the other end.
- Draw guide rings. Light pencil circles every 3 to 6 inches, then 8, 12 or 16 symmetry lines.
- Paint from the centre out. Finish one ring before moving on. Use a size 2 round brush for petals and a size 0 for fine lines.
- Add dots last. Thin acrylic with a little water and dot with a tool or pencil end.
- Erase guides after paint is dry for at least 24 hours.
For easy simple mandala wall art, use one colour on a contrasting wall and keep to four or five rings.
Mirror Mandala Art and Lippan Style Pieces
Mirror mandala art borrows from the lippan work of Kutch. Small mirrors set in clay rings catch light from every angle. See our lippan art materials guide for clay and mirror choices.

Classic lippan mandala art with mirror work: white clay rings with round and diamond mirrors. It suits almost any wall colour.
Artist tip Set mirrors while clay is soft. Dried clay will not grip them.

Small mirror mandala art on a 6 inch board. Make four and hang them as a grid, or gift them singly.
Artist tip Paint the clay red after it dries and leave mirror faces clean.

Mirror mosaic in an arch shape. Black base and gold clay give it a rich look that works in a dining room.
Artist tip Use a fine brush and thinned gold paint for the clay. Thick paint fills the grooves.
Mandala Art on Bottles and Plates
Not every piece needs a wall. A mandala art design on bottle or plate sits on a shelf and can be hung later with a plate hook.

An empty glass bottle painted blue with a white mandala wrapped around it. Turns a recycled bottle into a shelf piece.
Artist tip Wipe glass with rubbing alcohol first so paint grips, then seal with clear varnish.

Dot mandala on a plain steel plate. Bright and cheerful, it can hang on a kitchen wall or sit on a stand.
Artist tip Use a fine dotting tool or the back of a pencil for even dots on metal.

Three terracotta plates in white and black mandala patterns. Different designs, same colours, so the set looks planned.
Artist tip Seal unglazed terracotta first. Raw clay soaks up paint and dulls the colour.
Mandala Art Rangoli Designs
Mandala art rangoli is the same ring logic drawn on the floor. It is a good way to practise symmetry at a large size. Find more circular ideas on our flower mandala art page.

A powder rangoli built ring by ring in pink, orange and white. Bright colours read well from a doorway.
Artist tip Draw guide circles with chalk and a string before pouring any colour.

Made with fresh petals and leaves, so no powder mess. Lasts a day and smells lovely.
Artist tip Lightly sprinkle water on petals every few hours so they stay fresh.

A small white chalk rangoli, about 2 feet across. Good for daily practice or a balcony.
Artist tip Keep a damp cloth near you. Chalk lines wipe off so you can redo a ring.
Materials and Choosing a Surface
| Surface | Paint or material | Dry time |
|---|---|---|
| Wall | Acrylic or wall emulsion | 4 to 6 hours per coat |
| Canvas or MDF | Acrylic | 1 to 2 hours |
| Mirror and clay | Air-dry clay, glass mirrors | 24 to 48 hours |
| Glass bottle | Acrylic plus clear varnish | 24 hours |
| Rangoli | Powder, chalk or petals | None |
What makes a piece cost more: size, hand painting over printing, real mirrors, gold paint and the hours of fine detail. For mirror pieces in the true Kutch style, read lippan art.
Care and Cleaning
Dust painted walls and canvases with a soft dry cloth. Wall paint with a washable finish can take a damp wipe after a month. Never wet clay and mirror pieces. Wipe only the mirrors with a dry cotton bud. Painted bottles and plates are for display, not for food or washing.
Questions about these designs
How do I draw a big mandala on a wall?
Mark the centre and use a string with a pencil tied to it as a compass. Draw light guide circles and symmetry lines first, then paint from the centre out. Work one ring at a time.
Which paint is best for mandala art on wall?
Acrylic paint works on primed walls and dries in a few hours. Wall emulsion is fine for large flat areas. Seal with a clear matt coat if the wall is in a busy area.
How do you make mirror mandala art?
Draw the mandala on MDF, lay clay coils on the lines and press small glass mirrors into the clay while it is soft. Let it dry flat for a day or two. Our lippan art materials page explains each step.
Can I make a mandala art wall hanging without drilling?
Yes. Use a light MDF or canvas piece and strong adhesive hooks rated for its weight. Keep it under a kilo for safety.
What is mandala art rangoli?
It is a rangoli built in rings from a centre point, the same way as a mandala on paper. You can use powder, chalk or flower petals.
Is mandala wall art good for beginners?
Start with a small canvas or a 12 inch board before a full wall. Use one or two colours and simple petals. Try our mandala art for kids page for very easy layouts.
