Mandala Art Kit Guide: Pens, Paper and Tools You Need
12 designs Mandala art Updated 9 Oct 2026
A good mandala art kit does not need to be big. Four or five well chosen tools will take you from your first circle to a full page design.
In this guide we show what goes in a kit, which mandala art pen to pick, which paper holds ink well and how to look after your tools. You will also find separate kit lists for kids, beginners and adults, based on what has worked in our hobby classes over many batches of students.
Once your kit is ready, try designs from our easy mandala art, dot mandala art and black and white mandala art galleries.
What Goes in a Mandala Art Kit
These flat lays show three kits for three kinds of artists. Every kit has something to draw guides, something to ink with and good paper.

This five-item kit is all a beginner needs for the first month. Nothing here is fancy, and that keeps daily practice simple.
Artist tip Buy one pen each in 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 mm before you spend on a full set.

Young children do best with thick tools and a stencil instead of a sharp compass. Bright sketch pens keep them interested.
Artist tip Swap the compass for a plastic circle stencil until children are about ten years old.

An adult kit adds more tip sizes, a protractor and a proper sketchbook. The zip pouch keeps everything together for travel.
Artist tip Store fineliners lying flat in the pouch so the ink stays spread evenly along the nib.
Best Mandala Art Pens: Tip Sizes and Types
A useful mandala art pen set covers fine, medium and bold lines. Black pigment fineliners are the base, and gel and brush pens add shine and colour.

A line test chart shows exactly what each nib does on your own paper. Make one before every new project.
Artist tip Use 0.1 mm for tiny details, 0.3 for petals, 0.5 for rings and 0.8 for outlines.

Gel pens are the usual choice for mandala art on black paper. White shows every line, and gold adds a festive shine.
Artist tip Wipe the gel pen tip on scrap paper every few minutes to clear dried ink.

Brush pens give thick-to-thin strokes and quick colour fills. Swatch them first, as the cap colour is often not the true ink colour.
Artist tip Use brush pens on smooth 200 gsm paper, as rough paper frays the soft tips.
Which Pen Is Used for Mandala Art?
Ask in any hobby class which pen is used for mandala art and most people will say a black fineliner. A fineliner has a firm, thin tip and pigment ink that stays dark and does not smudge once dry. That makes it the best pen for mandala art outlines and fine detail. Other pens have their own jobs.
| Pen type | Tip sizes | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pigment fineliner | 0.05 to 0.8 mm | Outlines, petals, tiny details | Tips bend if you press hard |
| Gel pen | 0.5 to 1.0 mm | White or gold lines on black paper | Needs drying time, can smear |
| Brush pen | Soft flexible tip | Colour fills, thick and thin lines | Frays on rough paper |
| Sketch pen | About 1 mm | Kids, bright colour | Bleeds through thin paper |
| Ball pen | 0.7 mm | Quick practice | Ink blobs at line ends |
For a full mandala art pen drawing, a set of 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.8 mm covers almost everything. If you can buy only one, choose 0.3 mm. It is fine enough for petals and bold enough for rings.
Mandala Art Tools: Compass, Protractor and Stencils
Guides make or break symmetry. These mandala art tools help you draw even circles and equal sections before any ink goes down.

Light guide circles at equal gaps give your rings neat, even spacing. Press softly so they erase cleanly later.
Artist tip Space circles 1 cm apart as a beginner, and go down to 5 mm once your petals get smaller.

Sixteen lines, one every 22.5 degrees, leave room for detailed petals. Eight lines at 45 degrees are easier for a start.
Artist tip Mark angles on the outer circle, then join each mark through the centre with a ruler.

Stencils and dotting tools are the core of a dot mandala art kit. Ball tips in several sizes give round, even dots.
Artist tip Mix acrylic and water until the paint pours slowly, like thick curd.
Finished Pieces Made with a Simple Mandala Art Kit
Here is what the same basic tools can produce. None of these needs more than three pens and a compass.

One black pen family and some patience give a rich full paper design. It suits a frame or a school art file.
Artist tip Ink the outer rings last so your palm does not smudge the centre.

Alpona-style flowing petals look lovely in white on black. Good for festive cards and wall collages.
Artist tip Draw pencil guides with a white charcoal pencil so they show on black paper.

Pencil alone can give a mandala real depth through shading. It is also the cheapest way to practise every day.
Artist tip Use an HB pencil for lines and a 4B for shading the inner parts of petals.
Paper and Sketchbook Weights for Mandala Art
Paper weight is measured in gsm (grams per square metre). Heavier paper is thicker and handles ink, erasing and colour better.
- 70 to 100 gsm: normal printer or notebook paper. Fine for quick practice only, as fineliners can bleed.
- 180 gsm: the sweet spot for pen work, pencil shading and sketch pens. Most sketchbooks are near this weight.
- 200 to 250 gsm: good for brush pens, markers and light colour layers.
- 300 gsm: needed for watercolour, so the sheet does not buckle.
- Black paper: use with white and gold gel pens. A smooth surface keeps gel lines clean.
Smooth paper suits fineliners and brush pens. Lightly textured paper suits pencils and watercolour. Buy a small pad of each and test before committing to a big sketchbook.
Mandala Art Kit for Kids and for Adults
Kit for kids (age 5 to 10):
- A plastic circle or mandala stencil instead of a compass
- Soft HB pencil and a big eraser
- Sketch pens and chunky crayons
- Thick 180 gsm paper or a spiral drawing book
To keep mandala art easy for kids with pencil guides, draw two or three circles for them and let them fill the rings with simple dots and petals. More ideas are on our mandala art for kids page.
Kit for beginners and adults:
- Fineliners in 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.8 mm
- A metal compass, a 15 cm ruler and a protractor
- Mechanical pencil (0.5 mm lead) and a kneaded eraser
- A 180 gsm sketchbook and a few sheets of black paper
- White and gold gel pens
- Optional: brush pens or coloured pencils
A DIY mandala art kit built from these items costs less than many ready boxed sets, and every tool is one you will actually use.
Colour Mediums for Mandala Art
Once your black outlines are steady, colour opens up many new looks. Each medium behaves differently.
- Coloured pencils: the easiest to control. Layer light to dark for smooth shading.
- Sketch pens: bright and cheap, but test on your paper first, as some bleed.
- Brush pens: quick, even fills on smooth paper.
- Watercolour: soft blends on 300 gsm paper. Ink the lines with waterproof pigment pens so they do not run.
- Acrylic: for canvas, stones, plates and walls. Thin it slightly for dot work. A coat dries in about 20 to 30 minutes.

How to Care for Your Mandala Art Pens and Tools
- Cap every pen right after use, until you hear the click. An open fineliner dries in minutes.
- Store fineliners flat. Store brush pens flat too, or tip down if the maker suggests it.
- Never press hard on a 0.1 or 0.05 mm pen. The tip will sink and the line will go thick.
- Do not draw over wet paint or gel ink, as it clogs the nib.
- Wipe dotting tools and brushes with a damp cloth before acrylic dries on them.
- Keep the compass lead sharp, and tighten the hinge screw if circles start to wobble.
With this care, a good fineliner lasts for several full page drawings. For more pen-only practice ideas, try our doodle mandala art page.
Questions about these designs
Which is the best pen for mandala art?
A black pigment fineliner is the best all-round pen. Start with 0.3 mm, then add 0.1 and 0.8 mm. Pigment ink stays dark and does not smudge once dry.
What should a mandala art kit for beginners include?
A pencil, an eraser, a compass, a ruler, three fineliners (0.1, 0.3, 0.5 mm) and 180 gsm paper. That is enough for your first month of practice. Add a protractor and gel pens later.
Can I use a ball pen for mandala art?
Yes, for practice. A ball pen works, but it can leave blobs at the end of lines and the ink is not as dark. Switch to a fineliner for pieces you want to frame.
Which paper is best for mandala art?
Use 180 gsm paper for pen and pencil work, 200 to 250 gsm for brush pens, and 300 gsm for watercolour. Smooth paper gives the cleanest pen lines.
What is a dot mandala art kit?
It is a set of dotting tools with ball tips in several sizes, stencils and acrylic paints. You use it to paint dot mandalas on stones, plates or canvas.
How do I stop my mandala pens from drying out?
Cap them right after use, store them flat and away from sunlight, and never leave them in a hot bag or car. Wipe gel pen tips on scrap paper if the ink stops flowing.
