12 designs Folk paintings Updated 9 Oct 2026
Kangra painting is a fine miniature style from the hills of Himachal Pradesh, loved for its soft greens, winding rivers and flowering trees. It belongs to the wider family of Pahari painting, which grew in the small hill kingdoms around Kangra.
Every one of these kangra painting images is an original design. We show landscapes, birds, trees and empty palace gardens, each with the medium, motifs and one tip you can use at your own desk. Kangra work is traditionally devotional and romantic in theme, but here we stay with nature and architecture.

Kangra Painting Landscapes with Hills and Rivers
Hills stacked in layers, a river that bends through the middle and tall trees on the banks are the heart of Kangra art. These pieces need patience more than talent.

Layered hills in three soft greens give depth without any hard outline. It suits a study wall or a quiet reading corner.
Artist tip Paint the farthest hill palest first, then add darker greens as you move toward the front.

Rolling grey clouds and a thin white waterfall show the rainy season, a favourite mood in hill painting. Good for a calm living room.
Artist tip Lay the clouds in with a damp brush so the grey softens at the edges on its own.

White peaks at the top and small slate roof huts below give a true hill village feel. A thoughtful gift for anyone from Himachal.
Artist tip Leave the paper bare for snow instead of adding white paint, because untouched paper stays brighter.
Kangra Style Painting of Birds and Flowering Trees
Peacocks, cranes, parrots and trees in full bloom show off the fine brush control the kangra style of painting is known for. Each feather and leaf gets its own stroke.

The peacocks are built from tiny strokes so every feather shows. A good piece for a bedroom or a festive corner.
Artist tip Use a size 0 or 00 round brush for feather eyes and rest your wrist on the table.

A night scene in deep blue with white cranes that almost glow. It works well in a dim reading nook or bedroom.
Artist tip Mix a touch of blue into your white for the cranes so they sit inside the night colours.

One big tree fills the page, with small birds tucked between the branches. Lovely on a kitchen or dining room wall.
Artist tip Paint the leaves in at least four greens, from lime to bottle green, to give the tree volume.
The Kangra School of Painting in Short
The Kangra school is one of the best known schools of miniature painting in the hills of Himachal Pradesh. It grew alongside other Pahari schools in nearby hill kingdoms, and together they are called Pahari painting.
| Feature | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Place | Kangra and nearby Pahari hill kingdoms, Himachal Pradesh |
| Brushwork | Very fine lines, single-hair detail on leaves and feathers |
| Colours | Soft greens, blues, ochre, pinks, touches of gold |
| Common scenes | Hills, rivers, flowering trees, birds, palaces, gardens |
| Themes | Traditionally devotional and romantic |
What makes a famous Kangra painting stand out is its softness. Lines flow, distant hills melt into the sky, and nature is never just a background. Students preparing notes can remember three words: fine, soft and green.
Kangra Miniature Painting of Palaces and Gardens
Palace terraces, arches, fountains and walled gardens appear in many kangra miniature painting works. Our versions keep these spaces empty so the architecture is the subject.

Arches, a small fountain and rows of cypress give a quiet, formal look. It brings calm to a hallway or office cabin.
Artist tip Draw the arches with a ruler and a light pencil line first, then trace them with a fine brush.

A warm orange sky and a carved balcony make a peaceful evening scene. It suits a living room with wooden furniture.
Artist tip Glaze the sky in thin washes of yellow, then orange, letting each layer dry fully before the next.

Seen from above, the courtyard shows the neat garden plans these painters loved. Good for a study table or a class display.
Artist tip Plan the courtyard on a grid of squares, then paint flat colours before adding any detail.
Pahari Style of Painting from the Hill Kingdoms
Pahari art covers several hill schools. Some are soft and lyrical like Kangra, others use bold flat colour and strong outlines.

Some Pahari work uses flat, bright grounds and strong outlines instead of soft shading. A cheerful choice for a sunny room.
Artist tip Fill the yellow ground with a flat brush in two thin coats, never one thick coat.

Three deer at a stream, framed by tall trees, show how hill painters filled a forest with life. Nice for a nature lover's room.
Artist tip Add deer spots last with the tip of a size 1 brush once the brown base is bone dry.

Half the sheet is a pencil outline and half is painted, so learners can see each stage. Made for beginners and art class notes.
Artist tip Start on 300 gsm watercolour paper so thin washes do not buckle the sheet.
How to Make an Easy Kangra Painting at Home
- Pick a small size. Start with A5 or A4 watercolour paper of 300 gsm.
- Draw lightly. Sketch two or three hill lines, one river and one tree with an HB pencil. Keep it simple.
- Paint far to near. Wash the sky first, then the far hills in pale green, then darker hills in front.
- Add the river and tree. Use blue for water and four greens for leaves.
- Detail last. With a size 0 brush, add leaf veins, ripples and small birds.
- Finish with a border. Rule a thin red or gold border around the scene.
Gouache gives the flat, opaque look of old miniatures. Watercolour is easier to blend for beginners. Each layer dries in 10 to 20 minutes. Frame finished work behind glass and keep it away from direct sun.

Questions about these designs
What was the main subject of Kangra painting?
Kangra painting was traditionally devotional and romantic in its themes. Nature was always central, with hills, rivers, rain clouds, flowering trees and birds setting the mood of each scene. Our gallery focuses only on these landscapes, birds and palace gardens.
Which state is Kangra painting from?
It comes from the Kangra region of Himachal Pradesh. It is one of the best known Himachal Pradesh art forms and part of the larger Pahari miniature tradition of the hills.
What is the difference between Kangra and Pahari painting?
Pahari painting is the umbrella name for miniature schools of the hill kingdoms. Kangra is one of those schools. Kangra work is softer and more flowing, while some other Pahari styles use bold flat colours and stronger outlines.
What should I note about the Kangra school of painting for UPSC?
For the Kangra school of painting UPSC notes, remember the region (Himachal Pradesh), the style (fine, lyrical brushwork with soft greens), the subjects (nature, hills, rivers, flowering trees) and that it belongs to the Pahari family. Mention traditional themes in one neutral line.
Is Kangra painting easy for beginners?
Full miniatures take weeks, but an easy Kangra painting of hills, a river and one tree is fine for beginners. Use watercolour on thick paper, work from far to near and save fine detail for the end.
How can I tell a handmade Kangra painting from a print?
Look closely at the edges of leaves and lines. A painted piece has slight changes in thickness, small brush marks and raised paint where colours overlap. Prints look flat and evenly dotted under a magnifying glass. Gold accents and larger sizes take more hours, so they cost more.
