Kalamkari Half Sarees, Lehengas and Skirts Gallery
15 designs Kalamkari art and wear Updated 9 Oct 2026
Kalamkari half sarees bring the tree of life, peacocks and lotus creepers of Andhra Pradesh onto the three-piece langa voni: a flared skirt, a fitted blouse and a voni draped like a half pallu. The name kalamkari comes from "kalam" (pen) and "kari" (work).
Below are 15 original outfits on headless dress forms and as flat lays: half sarees, lehengas, skirt and top sets, festive pattu langa and small sizes for little ones. Each has the fabric, motifs, the occasion it suits and a styling tip. For the art itself, see kalamkari art.
Kalamkari Half Sarees (Langa Voni)
The kalamkari half saree is a South Indian favourite for young women. Usually the skirt carries the kalamkari, while the voni is plain or lightly bordered.

A wide indigo skirt with a tree of life panel meets a plain mustard voni. Good for family functions and college fest days.
Artist tip Pin the voni at the shoulder and waist so the skirt panel stays visible.

Rows of small peacocks run along a deep maroon hem, with a bottle green voni. A classic pairing for festive mornings.
Artist tip Keep jewellery to small gold studs and a long chain so the border stays the focus.

All three pieces laid out together: a lotus print skirt, plain blouse and a kalamkari dupatta for half saree draping.
Artist tip Iron the skirt pleats first on the reverse so the print does not shine.
Kalamkari Lehenga for Women
A kalamkari lehenga choli has more flare and often a heavier dupatta. These work for sangeet nights, receptions and Navratri garba.

Kalidar panels in black carry elephants and creepers, set off by a red dupatta. Bold enough for a sangeet night.
Artist tip Choose a fitted choli in plain red so the busy panels do not clash.

Fine pen lines and slight colour variations show this is drawn, not printed. Pen kalamkari lehenga pieces cost more for the hours of work.
Artist tip Turn the hem over: on pen kalamkari the colour shows clearly on the back too.

A sheer chanderi kalamkari dupatta for lehenga styling adds lightness to a teal printed skirt. Ideal for day weddings.
Artist tip Pleat a light chanderi dupatta and pin it at one shoulder only.
Pen Kalamkari or Printed? How to Tell
Kalamkari comes in two styles: Srikalahasti pieces are drawn freehand with a bamboo pen, and Machilipatnam pieces are block printed. Both use natural dyes such as indigo blue, madder red, pomegranate-rind yellow and iron-based black. Screen prints copy the look at a much lower cost.
- Look for small irregularities. Pen and block work never repeat perfectly.
- Check the edges. Natural dye bleeds slightly into the cloth.
- Turn it over. On real kalamkari the colour shows on the back.
Price goes up with pen work, natural dyes, silk, zari borders, size and hours of work. Learn more on our kalamkari fabric page.
Kalamkari Skirt and Top Sets
A kalamkari skirt with a short or crop top is a lighter, everyday take on the lehenga. Easy for college, office parties and travel.

A long rust kalamkari skirt with a plain mustard crop top. A smart kalamkari skirt and top set for college events.
Artist tip Wear it with flat kolhapuris and oxidised silver earrings for an easy look.

A full umbrella cut on a white base shows off red and black motifs. Pair it with any plain cotton top.
Artist tip Wash dark kalamkari skirts alone for the first three washes.

Two skirts and two tops that mix and match, so one small wardrobe gives four looks.
Artist tip Pick tops in colours taken from the skirt print so every pair matches.
Kalamkari Pattu Langa for Festivals
Pattu means silk. Kalamkari on silk with a zari border is the dressy choice for Ugadi, Sankranti and family weddings.

Kalamkari creepers on magenta silk end in a broad gold zari border. Made for festival mornings and weddings.
Artist tip Dry clean silk kalamkari, or rinse gently in cold water with a mild shampoo.

Folded to show the silk sheen, the peacock body and the gold border. A treasured piece to pass down.
Artist tip Store silk wrapped in a soft cotton cloth, never in plastic.

A red silk skirt with yellow kalamkari motifs and a yellow voni. Bright and traditional for Sankranti.
Artist tip Add a waist belt to hold the voni pleats neatly in place all day.
Kalamkari Lehenga for Kids
Soft cotton kalamkari is comfortable for little ones. Pick simple cuts and an elastic waist for easy wear.

A yellow cotton lehenga with tiny elephants and a short top. Light and cheerful for birthdays and school functions.
Artist tip Choose an elastic waist so the lehenga grows with the child for a year or two.

A tiny pattu langa in pink silk with a gold border and a small kalamkari dupatta. Sweet for first festivals.
Artist tip Line silk langas with soft cotton so they do not scratch tender skin.

One of our crop top kalamkari lehenga designs in small size, with indigo prints and a plain orange top.
Artist tip Add a cotton lining to the top so it stays comfortable through a long day.

Questions about these designs
What is a kalamkari half saree?
It is a three-piece outfit with a kalamkari skirt, a blouse and a voni draped like a short pallu. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana it is called langa voni.
What is the difference between a kalamkari lehenga and a half saree?
A lehenga is usually worn with a choli and a loose dupatta. A half saree uses a voni that is pleated and draped across the body like a saree pallu.
Which dupatta goes with a kalamkari half saree?
A plain silk or chanderi voni in a colour from the skirt print works best. If the skirt is plain, pick a kalamkari dupatta for half saree draping so the print still shows.
Are kalamkari lehengas good for kids?
Yes, cotton ones are light and soft. Choose an elastic waist, a lined top and a skirt that ends above the ankle so little ones can walk and play.
How do I wash a kalamkari skirt?
Wash it by hand, alone, in cold water with a gentle soap for the first few washes. Do not soak or wring, and dry it in shade.
