Doodle Mandala Art: Easy, Flower and Zentangle Designs
18 designs Mandala art Updated 9 Oct 2026
Doodle mandala art mixes the round plan of a mandala with the free, playful shapes of everyday doodling. You start at the centre and work outward, but you do not have to measure every petal. It is the most forgiving way into mandala drawing.
This page has 18 original designs: easy doodles, flower and butterfly doodles, zentangle mandalas, name frames and borders. Each card lists the medium, the motifs and one tip.
If you want neater, measured work, start with easy mandala art. For bold black lines only, see black and white mandala art.
Easy Doodle Mandala Art for Beginners
A doodle mandala is looser than a measured one. You still work from the centre out, but the shapes are drawn freehand and small wobbles are part of the charm.

Each ring uses one doodle you already know: hearts, waves, then leaves. Freehand lines make it relaxed rather than strict.
Artist tip Do not erase wobbly lines. Go over them once with a thicker pen and they look planned.

Left in pencil, this one shows how a doodle grows ring by ring. Rub out the bits you dislike and try again.
Artist tip Use an HB pencil for drafting and a 2B for the final darker lines.

Swirls and dotted spirals flow round the centre like wind. It suits a diary page or the back of a notebook.
Artist tip Let each swirl turn the same way, clockwise or anticlockwise, for a sense of movement.
Flower Doodle Mandala Art
Flowers are the easiest doodles to repeat. Mix big and small blooms, add leaves to fill gaps, and the circle fills up fast. Butterflies fit in well too.

Small roses and daisies alternate around a big centre bloom. The mix of sizes keeps it lively.
Artist tip Draw a rose as a spiral first, then add two or three curved petals around it.

Four butterflies sit at the quarter points with flowers between them. Pastel colour makes it soft and cheerful.
Artist tip Place the four butterflies first at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock, then fill the gaps.

Lotus petals in the middle and fern fronds on the rim give it a garden feel. Kraft paper adds warmth.
Artist tip Use a white gel pen for highlights on kraft paper. It lifts the flowers straight away.
How to Draw a Doodle Mandala
- Draw a small circle or spiral in the middle of a 180 gsm sheet.
- Lightly pencil two or three guide circles. A cup and a bowl work fine.
- Pick one doodle per ring: hearts, waves, leaves, loops or tiny circles.
- Fill gaps with fillers such as dots, scales or short lines.
- Ink with a 0.5 mm pen, and use a 0.1 mm pen for tiny details.
- Thicken a few outer lines with a 0.8 mm pen so the shape reads clearly from a distance.

Zentangle Mandala Patterns
A zentangle mandala splits the circle into sections and fills each one with a different repeating pattern, called a tangle. It is slower and more structured than a free doodle, and very calming.

Eight wedges hold grids, scales, waves and checks. The contrast between busy and open sections is what makes it work.
Artist tip Leave one or two sections plain white. Rest spaces make the busy tangles stand out.

Each large petal holds its own tangle, and pencil shading gives depth. A good step up from simple doodles.
Artist tip Shade along one edge of each petal with a 2B pencil, then blend with a paper stump.

Ink the patterns first, then colour only every other ring. The black lines keep the colour from looking messy.
Artist tip Alcohol markers bleed. Put a scrap sheet under 300 gsm paper while colouring.
Letter Designs Doodle Mandala Art and Name Frames
Name mandala art is a doodled circle with a clear space in the middle for a name or initial. We show the frames with the centre left empty so you can add your own.

Vines and petals ring a blank centre circle about 5 cm wide. Write a name or one initial there in bubble style.
Artist tip Pencil the name in the empty centre before inking so it fits with even space all round.

Gold gel pen picks out the inner ring, so whatever initial you add later sits in a glowing frame.
Artist tip Gold gel looks best on cream or black paper. On white it can look pale.

Painted on a 20 cm MDF round, the blank centre takes a family name by the door. Seal it for outdoor use.
Artist tip Prime the MDF with white gesso first. Paint pens then glide and do not sink in.
Doodle Borders and Fillers
Fillers are the small shapes that close gaps between rings. Once you know eight or ten, any mandala drawing doodle art piece gets easier.

A practice sheet of twelve fillers: dots, scales, waves, ladders and more. Keep it next to you as a reference.
Artist tip Draw each filler in a 3 cm box. Small boxes train a steady pen.

Half mandalas sit along the top and bottom of the page, joined by a doodled band. Great for a notebook title page.
Artist tip Draw the bands with a ruler first, then hang the half mandalas from them.

A quarter circle in the corner is quick and frames a page well. Each band uses a different filler.
Artist tip Put the compass point on the corner of the page and draw quarter arcs only.
Creative Doodle Mandala Art in Colour
Colour changes the mood of a doodle. These designs show how a creative choice of paper or palette turns simple doodle mandala art into wall-worthy work.

Peacock feather eyes form the outer ring, with teal and green doodles inside. Bright and traditional in feel.
Artist tip Paint the feather eyes first and let them dry fully before adding pen details.

Neon pink, yellow and green on black paper glow under light. A fun pick for teens and dorm walls.
Artist tip Neon gel inks are thick. Draw slowly and lift the pen straight up to avoid smears.

A 60 cm doodle mandala painted on a grey wall behind a bed. White on grey stays subtle in small rooms.
Artist tip Mark the circle on the wall with a string and pencil tied to a pin in the centre.

Questions about these designs
What is doodle mandala art?
It is a circular design drawn from the centre outward using freehand doodles such as hearts, leaves, loops and dots. Unlike a measured mandala, small wobbles are fine. It is relaxing and quick to learn.
How do I make easy doodle mandala art as a beginner?
Start with a small circle, pencil two guide rings with a cup and a bowl, and fill each ring with one doodle you already know. Add dots to fill gaps. Ink it and erase the pencil.
What is the difference between a zentangle mandala and a doodle mandala?
A zentangle mandala divides the circle into sections and fills each with a set repeating pattern. A doodle mandala is freer and mixes shapes as you go. Zentangle work is slower and more detailed.
How do I make name mandala art?
Leave a clear circle about 5 cm wide in the middle and doodle rings around it. Pencil the name in the centre first, check the spacing, then ink everything. Bubble or block styles fit best.
Which pen is best for mandala drawing doodle art?
A 0.3 or 0.5 mm fineliner suits most doodles. Keep a 0.1 mm pen for tiny fillers and a 0.8 mm pen for outlines. On black paper, use white or neon gel pens.
Can I make flower doodle mandala art on a wall?
Yes. Mark the centre, draw the circle with string and pencil, and paint with acrylic and a fine liner brush. Keep the design simple with large petals so it reads from across the room.
